What does kindness look like to you? Is it simply holding the door for someone and letting them go first? Is it listening to someone share their stories of heartbreak and joy? I know most people think of kindness in terms of the Golden Rule: do unto others as you’d have them do unto you.
The Bible tells us, again and again, to be kind.
Being kind goes beyond simply doing unto others as you’d have them do unto you. It’s not only pursuing kindness but teaching it as well. We are to be an example of kindness so others may see Him through us. Our kindness should not be a performance for the masses, but a performance for the audience of One. Here are just a few scriptures to inspire us to be kind.
A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. Proverbs 15:1 ESV
A man who is kind benefits himself, but a cruel man hurts himself. Proverbs 11:17 ESV
Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you. Ephesians 4:32 ESV
Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, Colossians 3:12 ESV
She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. Proverbs 31:26 ESV
So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith. Galatians 6:10 ESV
But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him? 1 John 3:17 ESV
He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? Micah 6:8 ESV
Whoever pursues righteousness and kindness will find life, righteousness, and honor. Proverbs 21:21 ESV
Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Romans 12:15 ESV
